The Poestenkill Historical Society welcomes back Phyllis Chapman as she portrays Lillian Gish. You may remember Phyllis from her last visit here, appearing as the Unsinkable Molly Brown. Lillian Diana Gish was an American stage, screen and television actress, director and writer whose film acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912 to 1987. [private] Gish was called “The First Lady of American Cinema.” She was a prominent film star of the 1910’s and 1920’s. With her debut in talkies only moderately successful, she acted on the stage for the most part in the 1930’s and early 1940’s. Returning to movies, Gish was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1946 for Duel in the Sun. She appeared in films from time to time for the rest of her life and made numerous television appearances from the early 1950’s into the late 1980’s.
