The steelhead is a type of rainbow trout that moves from a lake, in this case Lake Ontario, then enters rivers to spawn. In the fall, the fish enter rivers to feed on chinook salmon eggs. The fish will enter the river throughout the winter, with the largest run coming in the spring when mature fish go into rivers to spawn. Ranging in size from six to 25 pounds, they are great fighters that are very aerobatic, sometimes jumping several times. Many guides are available in the Salmon River /Pulaski, NY area.
