On Friday October 10 Berlin Central School honored its boys senior soccer players. Thirteen seniors played this year at the JV and Varsity level. Some have been playing soccer since kindergarten, some were returning after some time off and others decided to just be a part of a fun, tight knit group of athletes.
The boys team this year has shown Berlin what it means to enjoy and experience what athletics are supposed to be all about. Many of them played on travel teams in the spring, and most played together in a summer league. They started the year off with a “tailgate” breakfast they cooked for themselves and gathered together for after game suppers. While they are serious about winning the league this year and working their way through the sectional competition they seem to be having a good time.
Several games have gone to half time with Berlin not where they wanted to be but have ended after 80 minutes with a win or at least a tie. When they needed to keep their heads about them and knuckle down they’ve dug deep and pulled together to get the job done. Coach Schmich has remarked many times after games that this group of players has shown growth and he has really enjoyed being their coach.
The guys have a final home game October 17 and their last league game at Loudonville on October 20. They need to win both these games to get a good seed for Sectionals and win the CHVSL championship.
