An Overview of Columbia County Stoneware

September 12, 2014 By eastwickpress

The Stoneware Collectors Group will meet at 4 pm on Friday, September 19, in the Bennington Museum’s Ada Paresky Education Center to hear a presentation by Jon Meredith entitled “An Overview of Columbia County, New York Stoneware.” Open to the public, the lecture is included with the $10 admission to the Bennington Museum. Those who would like to browse through the museum galleries prior to the lecture may do so.

Meredith is an avid collector and expert on Columbia County stoneware, and his talk will provide valuable information on this very specialized area of stoneware collecting. Meredith’s talk is in conjunction with the Stoneware Collectors’ Group gathering and semi-annual sale being held on the grounds of the Antique Center at Camelot Village on Route 9 in Bennington on Saturday, September 20, from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Admission for Saturday is free. For additional information, please contact Steve or Lorraine German at 860-653-5733 or visit their website at www.madriverantiques.com/Bennington.html.

Jon Meredith has researched and collected Columbia County stoneware over the past 35 years and brings to his talk extensive knowledge on the subject. His research and collection include pieces produced at the potteries in Hudson, NY, as well as pieces made for various merchants throughout the county. Meredith’s interest developed at an early age – his parents were antique dealers and collectors in Germantown, NY, where Jon was born and raised. He is actively involved with the Columbia County Historical Society. His article on the manufacturing of 19th Century stoneware in Hudson appeared in the spring 2013 issue of the Society’s newsletter. Many pieces from his collection of items that are related to Columbia County have been featured in books written on the county’s history.

The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street (Route 9), in Bennington. VT. The Museum is open through October every day from 10 am to 5 pm.
