This summer marked the 40th year that the County has served as a Summer Food Sponsor operating meal sites under the Federal Summer Food Service Program. The program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and the New York State Department of Education to help ensure children under the age of eighteen receive nutritious meals during the summer when school is not in session. Rensselaer County has participated in the federal program since its inception.
“The Summer Food Program is a vital resource families can rely upon to ensure the youth of our communities are receiving nutritious meals during the summer months when school is not in session,” stated Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen M. Jimino. “Rensselaer County is proud to have been a part of this important program for 40 years.”
Rensselaer County’s Department for Youth administers the federally funded Summer Food Program by managing distribution sites located in needy areas throughout the County. The County currently operates 31 food sites that ran until August 29. Last year the County distributed 75,427 meals during the ten week program.
