Francis Cape’s Utopian Benches will be on exhibit through August 11 from 11 am to 4 pm, Friday through Monday, in the North Family Wash House.
Sculptor, artist and woodworker Francis Cape has created a series of benches based on original designs from utopian groups. At Mount Lebanon they represent seven distinct intentional communities with three from Shaker communities, including Mount Lebanon itself.
Utopian Benches places the work of artist Francis Cape in the context of Mount Lebanon Shaker Village. Visitors are invited to interact with benches constructed using designs from various intentional communities, including the Shakers, to draw connections and inspire discussion.
Through August 11, the benches are being exhibited in the North Family’s historic 1854 Wash House. Admission is by donation at the Granary Visitor Center.
