The Berlin Central School District will be collaborating with local businesses and community members to provide additional aesthetic improvements to the Middle School/High School. This comes after a row of trees along Route 22 in Cherry Plain were removed by New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) on August 6.
[private]In June NYSEG determined that the trees were interfering with power lines and therefore must be removed. In response to this decision, the District anticipates working with the community to replace those trees and update the curb appeal.
According to Berlin CSD Superintendent Dr. Stephen Young, this process will include working with local nurseries to determine which type of plants or trees are best suited for the topography and climate of the landscape. This determination will also consider the height of the tree or plant at its mature state so as to avoid any future obstructions with power lines.
Superintendent Young sees the process as an opportunity to further the ongoing enhancements to the building, as construction wraps up on Phase 2 of the Capital Project.
“This is an opportunity to collaborate with local businesses and community as we renew the face of Berlin Middle School/High School,” said Young. “We will consider memorial trees in memory of loved ones, alumni and veterans, and I anticipate the District will host a dedication ceremony as well.”
The project will also include student involvement, said Berlin High School Principal Dr. Cathie Allain.
“Our student council will work to secure donations from the community and businesses as well as their own fundraising efforts to make our school look better than ever,” said Allain. “It is always a positive when students can work together for the betterment of the school and community.”
The replacement process including the dedication ceremony will occur in the 2014-15 school year. Community input is encouraged at the District’s upcoming Board of Education meetings. For a schedule of meetings, please visit www.berlincentral.org.[/private]
