The Hoosick Falls Elementary School recognized dozens of students for consistently demonstrating good character throughout the 2013-14 school year with a really “cool” year end celebration.
Two students from each pre-kindergarten through grade six classrooms were invited by their teachers to attend an ice cream social on June 19 during which the students enjoyed make-your-own sundaes courtesy of Stewart’s and received certificates recognizing their efforts.
The school’s character education program focuses on different positive character traits throughout the year. Each month, students learn about and are encouraged to practice such positive behaviors as tolerance (September), respect (October), responsibility (January) and cooperation (March).
The ice cream social celebration also signals the end of another successful year for the Friends with Character Club – a group of fifth and sixth grade students who help organize and participate in service projects that help the school and community.
“The Friends with Character Club advisors and students deserve recognition for the exceptional work they do each year,” said Hoosick Falls Elementary School Principal Amy Netti.
“Every day I see evidence that what we are teaching students about character, helping others and giving back to the community is making a difference,” she said.
Among the good deeds Friends with Character Club students accomplished this year were collecting donations for food drives, creating greeting cards to send to veterans and collecting gently used eyeglasses for the Lion’s Club to give to people living in poverty around the world who are vision impaired.
