The second graders at Saint Mary’s Academy participated in a field trip to the Boston Aquarium. The students recently finished their unit on animals. They learned all about the six different animal groups; mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. While at the aquarium the students were assigned different animals to research and answer questions about. Some of the animals included sharks, stingrays and penguins. While at the aquarium, they were able to engage in many hands-on activities such as petting the stingrays and small sharks, starfish, crabs and sea anemones. The students saw the penguin exhibit, the huge live exotic fish tank, sea turtles and the seals. They even saw an IMax movie, in 3D about the South Pacific Ocean. The second-graders learned so many fun and interesting facts about the different animals in the aquarium, and we see that learning can take place anywhere, not just in the classroom.
