Rev. Joseph L. Halloran

New Lebanon – Rev. Joseph L. Halloran, 87, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at the Teresian House in Albany, NY. Born in Cohoes, NY, on May 30, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Elizabeth L. Geiger Halloran. He moved to Troy, NY, at the age of four and was a 1944 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy. He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT, and did his philosophical and theological studies at Our Lady of Angels Seminary at Niagara University. He was ordained a priest on his 26th birthday, May 30, 1952, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Albany by Bishop Edmund Gibbons.
ob-halloran.jpegRev. Halloran’s summer assignment after ordination was as Chaplain to the Brady Maternity Hospital in Albany. He served as associate pastor in St. Thomas the Apostle in Delmar, NY, St. Mary’s in Little Falls, NY, St. Thomas in Schenectady, NY, St. Peter’s in Saratoga, NY, St. James in Chatham, NY, (later Administrator) and St. Patrick’s in Johnsonville, NY. For three years he was Chaplain of St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, NY. While in Chatham, he became Chaplain for the Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth – a ministry he maintained for 30 years. In 1968, he was appointed Pastor of Sacred Heart in Castleton, NY. Three years later he was appointed Pastor of Immaculate Conception in New Lebanon, NY, where he served for 29 years. Additionally, in 1997 he was assigned to St. Joseph’s in Stephentown, NY, which eventually became a mission of Immaculate Conception. Father retired from administrative duties in 2000 and lived at St. Paul’s in Troy and later moved to the Teresian House in 2011.
He is the brother of Robert J. and wife Joan Halloran of West Boylston, MA, Leo and wife Nancy Halloran of Greensboro, NC, Joan and husband William Dame of Naperville, IL, Elizabeth and her late husband Edwin Wall of Syracuse, NY, and the late Marie Jennings and Richard Halloran. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, November 9, at 11 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, 732 US Route 20, New Lebanon, with the Most Reverend Howard J. Hubbard, D.D., Bishop of Albany as the principal celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Troy. The reception of the body will take place Friday, November 8, at 4 pm at the Immaculate Conception Church, and visitation will continue until 7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Teresian House Foundation, 200 Washington Avenue Extension, Albany, NY, 12203, in honor of the wonderful care given to Father.
