The Berlin Boys Soccer team started the season winning the New Lebanon Tournament.
On Thursday, September 5, in the New Lebanon tournament the Mountaineers played St. Joseph of Pittsfield. Berlin outshot St. Joe’s 30 to 16 and totally dominated the game defensively, yet they could only manage one goal, from Keel Krumenacker on an assist from Zach Spaniol. James Mayer did a great job defensively shutting down St. Joe’s top scorer. Jackson Burhans had 13 saves in goal for the shutout as Berlin went on to win 1 to 0.
On Saturday, September 7, the Mountaineers had a hard fought game with New Lebanon as both teams had streaks of dominating the play and both had many scoring opportunities, but neither team could manage a goal throughout the game. Jackson Burhans made 5 saves in goal for the shutout.
The game came down to a shoot out with Berlin winning 5 to 3 and taking home the championship trophy. Dustin Fiske, Zach Spaniol, Cody Seel, Matt Boyle Montero and Jackson Burhans all converted their penalty kicks. New Lebanon and Berlin played a hard fought yet very sportsmanlike game.
The two teams met again on Wednesday, September 11, at Berlin at 4 pm for the league opener for both teams. Berlin will then play Loudonville Christian at Berlin at 4 pm on Friday, September 13.
