The Flying Deer Nature Center will present Song of the Forest on March 22-24 at the Abode of the Message, New Lebanon.
Since time immemorial, birds have lifted the human mind and heart into brighter places with their enchanting sounds. We may appreciate the beauty of birdsong, but we often miss many messages the birds are telling us about their natural surroundings and about ourselves. By learning the language of the birds and conducting ourselves in accord with the flow of nature, both outwardly and inwardly, we can begin to build a deeper communion with fox, deer and the rest of our natural neighbors.
Song of the Forest, taught by the directors of Flying Deer Nature Center, explores the marvelous world of bird language as informed by Jon Young, the country’s foremost bird language specialist. Through storytelling, lecture, slide shows, outdoor activities, field exercises and more, we will:
• identify the “Five Voices of the Birds,” including bird alarms;
• learn tools to engage the senses, quiet the mind and cultivate inner peace;
• explore basic and advanced approaches to bird identification;
• spotlight five local winter birds to study for bird language, and
• learn “routines of invisibility” to help us quiet our minds and join, rather than disturb, the still waters of our surroundings.
All are welcome, including birders, naturalists, spiritual seekers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Tuition is $150, plus room and board fees (commuter rates available). Register by emailing programsoffice@theabode.net or calling 518-794-8095.
