The Life Of George Holcomb – George’s Baby Is Sick

August 17, 2012 By eastwickpress

September 10, 1823, Wednesday: Today Squire E. F. Booge called to our house and left a mortgage of Brother Sylvester’s property to be signed into my hands to secure me my pay what he was owing me and to keep others from getting it where some had got him into debt dishonestly.
September 11, Thursday: I took the covered wagon and carried my wife and children and Mother Spring to Richmond on a visit to Jay Wylie’s and we called to the Shakers and visited their school to see my cousins Orsula and Eleanor Potter.
October 4, Saturday: Today mother and Eleanor went to Dalton on a visit to Ann Wheelers and tonight at a late hour we were disturbed with a straggling woman. She abused the house with abusive language and threats of burning the house and breaking the windows, and I drove her off the highway and she went on.
Oct. 5, Sunday: This evening I went over to my farm after the cows. I turned them out and a shower came. I went into I Newton’s a few minutes and I missed said cows and they were not milked tonight.. Tonight I got but a very little rest for I was taken with the dysentery. Monday: I am quite unwell with said dysentery. Today I tended to boiling sweet apple cider, and other chores.
January 21, Friday: This morning early I walked over after Doctor Elijah Graves to come and Doctor our 2nd daughter, Lucinda Angeline. He came and gave a moderate phisic and said child might have had a bad cold and concluded it would soon be better, without his calling agaln.
Saturday: Today Sylvester’s wife was put to bed but her child was stillborn but she was left very low. This morning I took the cutter and fetched Mother Spring to our house for my child.
Sunday I took the single wagon and rode for Doctor Dwight Right for my beforementioned child, for it lays stupid and we think dangerous. Said Right came immediately and doctors the child with great exertion .
This evening Wm walked over after Doctor Graves to come early tomorrow morning to my child. This is said Doctor Right’s orders. Tonight we sat up all night with the child. It was very dangerous through the operation of the medicine and in great distress.
