March, skip or dance your way into the great Schaghticoke Fair, Wednesday, August 29, through Monday, September 3. The first ever fair-wide theme will be introduced at the 193rd annual fair. The idea was originated by Homemaking Superintendent, Marilou Town, and Flowers Superintendent, Nancy O’Donnell. The idea of having a fair-wide theme originated in the Family Living Center last year when creative exhibits and entries were displayed. With support from other building superintendents the concept quickly caught on and throughout the week of the fair, there will be Happy Feet signage displayed all over the various buildings and barns. A scavenger hunt for the children will take place daily with information provided at the Family Living Center.
The superintendents wanted to open up a theme design contest to the students of Rensselaer County. The requirements were to be a currently enrolled high school student in Rensselaer County and to incorporate the elements of agriculture and horticulture to represent the Rensselaer County Agricultural
and Horticultural Society, otherwise known as the Schaghticoke Fair. Lauren Madigan, a student of Hoosic Valley High School, is the first winner of the Happy Feet design contest. The design was chosen based on content and creativity. Lauren’s design will be featured on the cover of the 2012 Schaghticoke Fair brochure and also on T-shirts that will be sold at Cottonwood Square in the Arts and Crafts Building for $10 throughout the week of the fair. In addition, Lauren will become an honorary judge for future themed fair design contests and will be presented a certificate of achievement on stage in the park on Friday, August 31, at 5:30 pm.
Speaking of Happy Feet, on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm, Radio Disney will rock the fair with a street party for the kids with fun games and cool contests for everyone to enjoy. Radio Disney will also be providing prizes and fun give-aways. Thursday is Senior Day, when admission is only $5 if you are 62 or older; come and participate with Fritz’s Polka Band and join in at the dance party at 4 and 8 pm. Trophies will be awarded for Best Dressed and Best Dance couples. Friday through Monday, the area’s best bands and Nashville’s favorites will be providing toe-tapping entertainment.
