New Lebanon Valedictory and Salutatory Speech
by Lauren Borosky and Kelsey Hennig reading alternating paragraphs beginning with the Valedictorian (unless otherwise noted)
Welcome family, friends and acquaintances to the graduation of New Lebanon Jr./Sr. High School’s class of 2012. We are here to celebrate a huge milestone in our lives. This is a day we have been dreaming about, for what seems, like forever. Today represents the end of the beginning.
For these past 13 years we have all worked toward the same goal, graduating. Now we all get to choose what our next goal is. For most of us the next step is to go to college, for others the next step is jumping into the workforce and for a select few the next step is getting training to become part of the Marines.
Although we have so many great expectations of what the future holds, we also have many fears of the unknown. We are looking forward to our first step of independence. No parents nagging us to clean our rooms or to go to bed, doing what we want when we want and meeting new people and making new friends. But along with this independence comes responsibility. We won’t have our parents there to wake us up in the morning or to make our lunches, no teachers constantly reminding us of due dates, and we will have to figure out our schedule and master time management on our own. The increasing responsibility is preparing us for the rest of our lives.
Together we have grown to this age of somewhat-maturity. In essence we have started our journey down the
take-off strip. We have made many memories along the way. Such as, Conor getting stuck under the merry-go-round, playing with hermit crabs in 4th grade, having intense soccer games during recess, hearing “Make it a good day or not the choice is yours” every morning 7th grade year and going on the senior trip. All of these memories we have made and lessons we have learned are the luggage we are taking for our journey. Some of them we will forget behind, but others we will carry with us for the whole flight.
As Oprah Winfrey once said, “Sometimes you find out what you are supposed to be doing by doing the things you
are not supposed to do.” This is the time in our lives where we need to make mistakes and try the wrong things so we can learn from them and find the right path. Some of us will change our majors until we find something we are passionate about; others will change jobs until we find what makes us happy. Different people will come and go in our lives, and others will stay leaving us with permanent friendships. It’s not going to be easy leaving what we know behind, and we may be closing some windows, but we will have the opportunities to open new doors.
Life isn’t always about the destination, it’s about the journey that leads us there, as Jessi Alexander wrote, “It’s all about the climb.” We will face many struggles during our journey, but through these struggles we will make friends, gain memories and find ourselves. Hopefully by the end of our lives we can look back and appreciate the memories we are about to make.
Through these past thirteen years we have had many people help us get to this point. Their guidance has helped us meet many goals and become who we are. As people, we have all grown in many ways, and I think we owe a lot of that to the teachers who surrounded us for the past few years. You have all been our guide throughout our years here, and many of you have not only been there teaching us, but you have been there to help with any problems we had. Many of you became our role models, and we looked to you for guidance and support. Going through high school our teachers constantly changed, but one teacher some of us had every year was Mr. Thompson. Although the concerts sound great, not every practice sounds that way. Thank you Mr. Thompson for putting in a lot of your time with us and giving us opportunities, such as playing solos or going to Virginia. Thank you also to the faculty who has helped us reach this monumental time in our life. From our teacher aides, to the main office and guidance office staff, you have helped us in numerous ways. I would also like to thank Ms. Pepe for helping direct us through the college process and helping us with any problem we had. I also would like to thank Ms. Pepe for letting me spend every moment of my free time in her office. I am going to miss being your “Intern” next year.
Kelsey Hennig – We would like to thank our parents who supported us 100% of the time. They have given us opportunities and stood behind us when we were in trouble. No matter where we go and what we do, there is always a part of them we will take with us, whether it’s our morals, our beliefs or the way we talk or walk. We have spent years wishing our parents would get off our backs, but now we realize our parents were part of the few who really ever had our backs. We owe you a thank you for everything you have done for us. Without all of you, we would not be here on this stage. You helped motivate us to keep pushing forward and perform at our full potential. We would like to thank our parents also for listening to us complain every day about how we had no idea how we would make it through senior year and how horrible the teachers were for giving us homework.
My parents are always saying how proud they are of me, but I am also so thankful of them, because of them I have gotten so many opportunities that other kids have not. I feel so proud of my whole family, sisters and brothers included, and I am very lucky to have them. Thank you!
Lauren Borosky – I want to especially thank my mom for helping me so much. Whether it was help with school work or letting me vent to you about my day, I wouldn’t have made it without you. You have been my rock, and I hope you realize you will be getting a lot of phone calls next year when I am at college so I can continue venting and asking for advice. I also want to thank my whole family including my God parents for always being there for me and helping me along the way.
Kelsey Hennig – We also want to thank our classmates. The 34 of us have stood together for years, and we have formed a family. We have spent countless hours in classes, lunch, sporting events, field trips and finally our senior trip together. We could not be happier to have such a supportive and welcoming class to spend our years of high school with. We have built many lasting friendships and memories that will never fade. Now we get to part our separate ways and take on new challenges, but we will always be here for each other when we come back home. Without this huge support system, we would not have survived high school. So thank you to every single person sitting in this room today.
Lauren Borosky – Today the flight we have boarded is taking off, and we are no longer just passengers. Kelsey Hennig – We are the pilots deciding what route we are going to take. Lauren Borosky – We are ascending into new challenges and facing new unknowns. Kelsey Hennig – As Dr.Seuss once said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” Lauren Borosky – The flight won’t always be easy and there will be moments where we will hit turbulence, but we have to work through it to see the skies above.
