The Berlin High School Envirothon Team was named the Rensselaer County Capital Region winners on May 10. On Thursday, May 10th, the Berlin High School and Middle School Envirothon teams traveled to Schoharie Valley to the Blenheim Gilboa Center to compete in their first Envirothon competition – the 2012 Capital Region Envirothon. They finished in first place, outcompeting reigning champions Tech Valley High School. The students performed remarkably well given they only had several weeks to prepare. [private]Overall, they ranked fourth out of 16 teams in the four county local competition. The BSC high school team represented Rensselaer County at the NYS Envirothon Competition at Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, NY, on May 23 and 24. The Envirothon is an outdoor, hands-on environmental competition held annually throughout the United States.
The competition, held each spring, tests the knowledge of each five member team in the categories of Soils, Aquatics, Forestry, Wildlife and Current Environmental Issues. It is a unique approach to environmental education.
In the high school division, the Berlin team defeated Tech Valley teams 1 and 2 to capture the Rensselaer County championship and qualify to compete at the States at Hobart-William Smith College in Central NY. The members of the team are Colleen Reichelt – Gr 9, Kaitlyn Goodermote – Gr 10, Cheyenne Seel – Gr 10, Caleb Hendricks – Gr 9, Cullen O’Brien – Gr 10, Bill Gundrum – Gr 11.
The BCS middle school team is the middle school regional champion defeating other middle school teams from
Albany, Schoharie and Schenectady counties. They are Luke Smith – Gr 6, Joshua Hendricks – Gr 6, Co-Captain Jesse Davis – Gr 7, Ryan Smyth – Gr 7, Co-Captain Ryan Reichelt – Gr 7.
