In recognition of National Poetry Month, local resident and Longfellow scholar Bruce Southard will deliver the lecture “Rediscover Longfellow” on Thursday, April 5, at 7 pm at the New Lebanon Library. This program is free and the public is welcome.
Designed for all ages, this presentation wraps stories of Longfellow’s life, art and legacy around fourteen of his most famous poems. The poems highlight the history, values and tradition so uniquely captured in Longfellow’s verse. Works are not read from a book but recited in the rich oral tradition that became a standard rite of passage for American schoolchildren up through the mid-twentieth century. These same schoolchildren, albeit with a touch of gray, can sit back, remember and rediscover the rhythm and power of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. And those new to his work will discover the inspiration in his words that helped shape our nation.
