April 29, 2011 By eastwickpress

Friday, July 6, 1855: Edward Hatch drew two loads slate stones from R. Jolls hill with ox team and Geo P. drew one load slate stones with the horse team and today John F. and Patrick Rafferty and the two Baileys and E. Hatch all worked to the barn. The rain stopped them two hours or more.
Saturday: I am quite lame, and John F. unwell, he only worked a spell this morning till it rained. It was quite a rainy day. The two Baileys only worked a short time this morning and E. Hatch quit  and went to making shingle when it began to rain, and Patrick Rafferty and Edward Manning and Michael Manning dug dirt out under the barn today till two o’clock, Edward Manning and his brother Michael quit and went home, they were offended at Geo P. giving them direction how to work.
Monday: Today John F. and Edward Hatch and Patrick Rafferty and the two Baileys worked at the barn getting stone, digging, and laying stone.
Tuesday: I am quite lame from hoeing in the garden yesterday.  Today John F. and E. Hatch and the two Baileys worked at the barn. I this afternoon walked up to see Geo P., he is unwell.
Wednesday: I walked up to Geo P three times this forenoon. One of the Baileys and E. Hatch went with our ox team and Geo P. ox team and got two loads slate stones from Joll’s hill and then the two Baileys worked laying wall but rather wet working, and the other Bailey butchered a pig this morning while the stone was getting dry. This afternoon E. Hatch went with Geo P. ox team  to N. Sweet’s quarry and got a load stone. John F. unwell, did not work, but this evening he and Wm Mott and Mott’s wife and Sarah O. went to Lebanon.
Thursday: The two Baileys worked till noon and finished the wall under the barn.
Friday: This morning after breakfast brother F. Jay Wylie took his wagon and carried me up to Geo P. and I got some ice and we returned home.
Saturday: John F. and Charles E. went in one horse wagon to Lebanon, he carried butter to H. Hull’s, and this afternoon he did nothing, he is unwell. Towards night I walked up to Geo P. and he handed me 20 dollars to hand to John F., and towards night the two Baileys called and John F. reckoned with them, they had worked 7 1/2 days each at one dollar and 50 cts per day, some lost time, it was rainy and John F. paid them 22 dollars cash and they allowed him 50 cts for keeping their horse till tonight.
