The Hoosick Fire Department responded to an alarm at the Jacques family home on Baertschi Road off Babcock Lake Road at 4:23 am Wednesday, January 26. Seven fire departments responded to the blaze. They were Hoosick, Pittstown, Hoosick Falls, West Hoosick, North Hoosick, Grafton and Raymertown. “It’s a one lane road with no place to turn the trucks around,” said Hoosick Fire Chief Bill Rifenburgh. “We had to run 1,500 feet of five inch hose.” Once the system was set up and they got started, they had good water pressure, Rifenburgh said.

Sunny Skies For The Winter Festival

Despite forecasts of an arctic blast, Grafton Lakes State Park’s 26th Annual Winter Festival visitors encountered sunny skies and temperatures in the upper teens on January 22. Combined with the two feet of snow throughout the Park, the weather made for a perfect setting for an event that entertained about 1,500 patrons throughout the day.

Dispatchers Honored At Hoosick Falls Fire Dept. Banquet

Hoosick Falls Dispatchers were recognized at the Hoosick Falls Fire Department Annual Banquet and Installation of Officers on Saturday evening, January 22, at the Firehouse. Chairman of the Hoosick Falls Board of Fire Commissioners and President of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, Bill Gaillard, presented plaques to the Dispatchers attending the event and said familiar voices with their knowledge of the area will be sorely missed when the local Dispatch service is shut down at the end of April. No Elevated Lead Levels In Blood Tests Of BES Students

Interim Schools Superintendent Brian Howard started off the Berlin School Board meeting Tuesday with a mostly positive report on blood lead screening and lead stabilization at Berlin Elementary School. Howard said that screening of students at the school was completed on January 28. Of the 128 students checked, none were found to have elevated levels of lead. Another 160 or more students had their blood tested by Rensselaer County and, according to Howard, no one in this group showed elevated lead levels. Howard said the District could be thankful for these results.

Economic Crisis May Affect The HFCS District Budget

At the regular monthly School Board meeting, Hoosick Falls Schools Superintendent Ken Facin said, “The economic crisis in New York State is real,” and it may well put the squeeze on school finances over the next few years. The tentative budget for the 2011-2012 school year will be presented at next month’s meeting, and we will learn at that time more details on the budget outlook for the school. Grafton Planning Board Action – January 2011

Public Hearing On Firearm License
The Grafton Planning Board meeting on Monday evening, January 24, was brief. The session began with a Public Hearing on the transfer of a Federal Firearms License for John Kelly of 141 Steve O’Dell Road. Kelly previously lived in Troy and has had this license for 20 years. By law he had to get the license transferred when he moved. There was no one at the hearing.

Bowl For Hoosick Kids Held At Barbecue Recreation
The Seventh Annual Bowl for Hoosick Kids event was held Saturday, January 15, at Barbecue Recreation on Route 22 in Hoosick Falls. Two waves of teams participated in the event, bringing in over $3,000 in pledges. Proceeds support programs for youth and families provided by the Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3).

Deer Me!

The abundant snowfall this winter has deer moving around throughout the area and even in the Village of Hoosick Falls looking for something to eat. On Monday, January 24, at about 9 am a deer was seen on Main Street. The poor creature was so distracted by people and traffic that it jumped over a portion of collapsed fence at the corner of Main and John Streets and landed in the cellar hole of the former Dougherty’s Restaurant.
