Leonard J. Hartnett

Bennington – Leonard J. Hartnett, 79, a resident of Carpenter Lane, Bennington, VT, died Sunday, November 28, 2010, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a long illness.
Born in Berlin, NY, on April 5, 1931, he was the son of the late Joseph and Madeline (Miller) Hartnett. Leonard received his education in the Berlin schools.
Leonard was married to the former Ivah Bootman; Ivah died November 25, 2004.  He later married Mary Lou Snyder on July 3, 2006, in Hoosick Falls, NY.
For many years Leonard was employed as a logger in the area and owned and operated his own logging business during that time.  He later was employed at the William E. Dailey Company until his retirement in 2001.
An avid outdoorsman, Leonard especially enjoyed hunting with his many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Hartnett of Bennington, a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Robert Welch of Bennington, five step-children, Phyllis Chapman of North Hoosick, NY, Judy Lowe of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Lenore Humphrey and Emily Harrison, both of White Creek, NY, and Audrey Giumarra of Bennington, several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.  Leonard is pre-deceased by a sister, Beverly Sweet, two brothers, Leo and Lloyd Hartnett, and by two step-sisters, Emily Wheeler and Claudia Retter.
Memorial services celebrating the life of Leonard J. Hartnett were held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 1, at 12 noon with Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, Pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will take place in the family lot in Meadowlawn  Cemetery in Petersburgh, NY.
Friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 am until the time of the service.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions in Leonard Hartnett’s memory may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT, 05201.
