HFCS Drama Presents The Importance Of Being Earnest

November 12, 2010 By eastwickpress

The Hoosick Falls Central School Drama club will be presenting another night of comedy in its fall production that runs from November 19 through November 21. The performances will begin with a short one-act entitled “Cabfare for the Common Man” by Mark Harvey Levine. The performance will then transition into the main focus of the event – Oscar Wilde’s classic satire The Importance of Being Earnest, preceded by a short technological presentation by drama students about understanding a satire. Thanks to the support of Hoosick Falls Central School, we are once again able to offer free admission to all.
Drama Director Robert Allen decided to repeat last year’s successful formula of fitting a short and long production into one performance. “It is such a great opportunity for our students, who have a wide array of experience in drama, to have two shows of vastly different scales to work on. The larger show gives our most experienced students the challenges of performing a full production while the smaller show allows us to get more students involved and to give them the necessary experience on stage to succeed. And it also provides a brilliant start to the performance!”
“Cabfare for the Common Man” is a smart, fast paced show that uses a taxi ride as an analogy for a trip through life. A man wakes up in bed and is immediately driven through the different points of his life (grade school, graduation, college and after) searching desperately for the destination of his journey.
The Importance of Being Earnest, written by Oscar Wilde and set in the 1890s, is a sharp and witty look at the British upper class of the time. Through a series of deceptions and ridiculous events, the play succeeds in pointing out the contradictions in high society and has entertained audiences for over a century.
The three performances will be on Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20, at 7 pm and on Sunday, November 21, at 2 pm. There will be a 15 minute intermission where food and drink will be available in the high school cafeteria with all proceeds going to the Performing Arts Booster Club. All audiences young and old are invited to attend what should be another memorable and enjoyable free HFCS Drama production.
