Monday, August 7, 1854: Today about noon Geo P. had a daughter born but Doctor Bates did not get there in time. This afternoon I rode up to get the widow Verona Holcomb to nurse Geo P’s wife but she was gone to Poestenkill. I returned and Geo P. got the widow Rodgers. Today John F. and Michael and Thomas mowed on my Rodgers farm.
Tuesday: We hayed on my Rodgers farm and finished there. Tonight about midnight Geo P. infant child died. John Merrils cradled oats about three hours.
Wednesday: This morning John F. went after Doctor Bates twice for Geo P’s wife. She is now sick.
Thursday: We hayed and worked at oats, we four of us, myself and John F. and Michael and Thomas.
Friday: We four of us hayed and finished mowing. At nearly night, I went to Philander Hatch’s and his son went with me in the widow Wylie’s weeds near the road and got dogwood leaves for to doctor Geo P. wife.
Saturday: John F. went to Hancock with Geo P. horse and got shod, he charged a venina (?) that he got to Squ. Wm. Hands this morning and left it with the Constable Chapman for to summons a jury.
Sunday: John F. went to Elder Sweet’s meeting at the Baptist meeting house with his two horse team and carried all my family excepting myself.
Monday: Today Squ. Horatio Right took dinner with us and then John F. carried him with others to C. Moffit’s to his court, he had with Edgar Brown. Said Brown non-suited him John F. took him again and then said Brown settled his house rent up till Sept and paid one month in advance. John F. paid Squ Right three dollars, his fees, and has paid nearly four dollars for others charges. I this afternoon walked over to said court and walked home again. I stayed but a short time, the case being non-suited.
Wednesday: My family, all but myself, went to Joshua B. Maxon’s to the funeral of his daughter Mercy (she died at age 23).
Thursday: I only tended to a few chores, I am quite lame.
