On Wednesday, November 17, at 6 pm, Darrow School will host Empty Bowls, a special community meal designed to bring awareness to world hunger. Proceeds from the event, which is also supported by the Mountain Road School in New Lebanon, with food by Brock Food Services, will benefit Charlie’s Pantry, a New Lebanon based food bank, and Oxfam America, one of the country’s largest nonprofits dedicated to creating lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice. To reserve a place, call 518-794-8520. For more information on Empty Bowls, visit www.emptybowls.net.
For a small donation, $15 for adults and $5 for children, guests of Empty Bowls will enjoy homemade soup and bread and will select and take home their own ceramic bowl from a variety of handcrafted pieces made from clay donated by Sheffield Pottery. Under Darrow School Art Department Chair Mona Seno, Mountain Road School
children from preschool through grade six worked with students in Darrow’s community-service program, Hands-to-Work, to create more than 150 unique handmade bowls, many of which have been stamped or embossed with natural items such as leaves, twigs and pine needles. The bowls were then fired and glazed in Darrow’s cutting-edge Joline Arts Center.
Darrow School is an independent, coeducational boarding and day school for grades 9 through 12, and features small classes and a challenging college-preparatory curriculum that affords all students the opportunity for active participation in the learning process. The School, established in 1932 on the site of the historic Mt. Lebanon Shaker Village on the New York-Massachusetts state line, has been recognized as a pioneer in the field of “hands-on learning,” and Darrow teachers use real-world topics and a dynamic approach to capture the imagination and make the subject matter come alive. The School is dedicated to serving students with diverse backgrounds and abilities, building on each student’s individual talents and interests to inspire enduring confidence for success in college and life.
