Driving The Cows To Pasture

October 1, 2010 By eastwickpress

Tuesday May 9, 1854: Today Mr. Finch came and bought 16 bushels of Geo P. potatoes at 75 cts per.
Wednesday: Geo P. walked up to Gardner Eldridges and paid him 100 dollars for a yoke of oxen he bought of him last month.
Thursday: I planted some potatoes in the garden. Today Elder Hawk visited us and stayed with us tonight.
Friday: I this morning went with the Irishman Edward Mang boy and drove my cows and Geo P’s cows onto my Rodgers farm to pasture to show the boy the way, and Geo P. has bargained for me with Edward to pay him 37½ cts per week for driving and fetching said cows. I planted corn half a day in the south meadow and Louisa Merrils dropped corn part the time and I gave her eight cts, and today John Merrils drew hog manure with oxen and wagon and manured the ground where I am planting.
Saturday: Today I finished planting the corn in the south meadow and I gave 4 cts to Wm Merrils to drop corn a spell. Today a man by the name of George from Pittsfield came and paid me 20 dollars for a sow and seven pigs three weeks old. John Merrils has worked for us every day this week and John F. has paid him in cash two dollars and 50 cts.
Monday: I this morning found one of my cows in J.B. Maxon’s swamp with a young calf and I left the cow and calf there til afternoon and in the afternoon I walked over and put said cow and calf in my swamp pasture.
