Popular director and actor John Trainor finishes his local theatrical career directing The Nerd for Circle Theater Players in Averill Park.
Trainor’s theater avocation began with the part of an offstage voice in a high school show and then blossomed in college. After a stint in the Peace Corps, he taught for ten years in the Bahamas, where he met his wife, Brenda, while directing and acting in community theater. Returning to this area, he has directed or acted in forty plays at

The Theater Barn in New Lebanon. In addition he has worked with the Ghent Playhouse in Columbia County and Berkshire Public and Town Players in Pittsfield, MA. On the side, he does Murder Mystery Theater with Stage Blood. Recently retired from Berkshire Farms as a teacher, he, along with his wife, will return to the Peace Corps in April, destination Africa. Earlier he had spent three years in Malawi in Africa. His talent and winning personality will be missed.
Trainor is very familiar with The Nerd, having appeared in it twice. He now directs it for Circle Theatre Players. This hilarious and antic romp, showcasing Larry Shue’s comic genius, is at once a send-up of stuffed shirts and a paean to friendship, loyalty and love. The show opens Friday, January 22, at 8 pm at the Sand Lake Center for the Arts, located at 2880 NY 43, ½ mile east of the blinking light in Averill Park. Play dates are January 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 pm and January 24 and 31 at 2:30 pm. Tickets are $16, and reservations can be made at www.slca-ctp.org or by calling 518-674-2007.
