Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature welcomed completion of the agreement to protect the historic farm that was once the home of world renowned folk artist Grandma Moses.
The Moses Farm is located on the border of Rensselaer County and Washington County in the towns of Hoosick and White Creek. The farm totals 171 acres.
The Moses Farm is being protected as part of the County’s Farmland Protection Program and programs in Washington County. Rensselaer County has saved approximately 3,000 acres of farmland and open space since implementing the program several years ago.
Under the program State, federal and private funds are sought to purchase easements and development rights to protect farmland and open space. State and County officials noted the completion of the agreement to protect the Moses Farm on November 20.
“We are excited about protecting this beautiful farm and working with Washington County to make this project a reality. This has been a good partnership with our neighboring county,” said Legislator Lester Goodermote.
“Every one of these projects helps save farmland and open space for future generations. Given the pressures facing farms and agricultural businesses, this is a very important effort and very deserving of support,” said Legislator Ken Herrington.
“These farms and open space properties are some of the most beautiful areas of our county. The protection program is an economical and effective way to protect these properties and support farming,” said Legislator Stan Brownell.
