To the Editor:
I was awakened at 7 am this morning (August 11) because Aldie (Goodermote, Stephentown Highway Superintendent), was right on the job with one of his huge machines. Given the horrific effects on some of our roads, including mine, of the recent deluge, I really want to give huge kudos to Aldie for being all over the place and doing a remarkable job on our Town roads.
Probably there has been no year in recent memory in which everything imploded at once in terms of water and snow and impact on our roads. Aldie said that for a while he was getting 15 to 30 calls a day from people with water issues, which is probably unprecedented. Even I had to call 911 late at night, and the magnificent fire department came so quickly – I could identify Cyril Grant among others – along with some of their colleagues from as far as Hoosick Falls – what an awesome display of volunteer and neighborly good will. I’m profoundly touched by the way so many people came out to help, if only to help detour traffic around a quickly developing hazard. The best of America…
