Berlin – Dorothy Frances Hampel Hayner, 98, of Berlin, NY, died on Saturday, January 14, 2017, in North Bennington, Vermont. [private][/private]Born September 3, 1918, in Schenectady, NY, she was the daughter of the late Alphonse and Helen O’Bryan Hampel. She married David G. Hayner in 1943; he preceded her in death in 2009.
Dorothy was a graduate of Draper High School in Schenectady and then went on to further her education at Russell Sage College and SUNY Oneonta, where she received her Master’s degree in elementary education. Dorothy’s passion was educating youth, which she did for 30 years as a home economics teacher in Jefferson, NY, and a kindergarten teacher in Berlin Central School, from where she retired in 1980. She enjoyed staying active and belonging to many groups, including the NYS Retired Teachers Assn., The American Legion Post #937 Auxiliary, the Taconic Valley Garden Club, and knitting numerous baby sweaters for family and friends. She was a long-time member of the Berlin United Methodist Church.
Dorothy is survived by two daughters; Margaret Hayner Engel of Rochester, NY, and Susan Hayner Loving of Stansbury Park, Utah; four grandchildren, Sara (John) Mark, Christopher (Emily) Loving, David (Danielle Barry) Engel, and Matthew (Erin) Engel, along with great-grandchildren; William, Elisabeth, Gabriel, Oliver, Griffin, Logan, and Bennett.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 11, at 2 pm at the Berlin United Methodist Church on South Main Street in Berlin, where the Rev. Kim Kie will officiate. Burial will follow in Berlin Community Cemetery. The family will greet visitors starting at 1 pm at the church.
