Ralph Hartzell will tell of the tradition of oxen driving on Monday, March 1, at the Stephentown Historical Society. The meeting is at 7:30 pm at the Heritage Center on Garfield Road (County Route 26) in Stephentown. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. For directions, telephone 518-733-5675.
Hartzell, an East Nassau, NY, resident, will tell about the use of oxen for work… the history, training, equipment and oxen commands. Oxen are a relatively inexpensive means of doing work and are still used extensively in third world countries. Hartzell and his wife, Judy, watched the oxen at the Eastern States Exposition thirty-five years ago and decided that they would be useful working in their woodlot. They currently have two pair as well as work horses and mules.
