Friday, January 6, 1854: I went with my one horse wagon and carried Russel Palmer five bushel turnips which makes eight bushel which pays him up for cutting my sausage meat 52 pounds and 20 pounds of the widow Eliza Wylie’s. I rode up to Daniel Himes and had 4 saws sharpened and set 42 cts, and I called in to Palmer Barnes shop and got a few shavings to kindle fire in my stoves. There I met with Wm. Dot the Town Collector and paid my tax which was 11 dollars and 86 cents and I paid Geo P.’s tax, 2 dol and 11 cts, and Geo P. paid me when I returned home. Today Geo P. went to Pittsfield with my one horse lumber wagon and carried his pork to Reed at 7 dollar per hundred, two pigs of it, and he carried a tub of butter for me at 20 cts per pound, it came to 5 dol 94 cts and today John F, drew manure on the hill with his ox team and sled.
Monday: John F. walked up to Nicholas Gardner’s to see if he could buy sheep but could not.
Tuesday: John F. took my horse and wagon and hitched on my two horse pleasure wagon that James Rich made for me and drew it to Palmer Barnes shop and left it to have a box made and other ways repaired or altered. He carried said Barnes a hind quarter beef, 86 pounds at five and a half dollars per hundred.
Wednesday: This forenoon Gardner Green came and butchered two pigs and for the same I paid him in turnips last fall, and today John Merrils chopped cord wood in my swamp on my Rodgers farm at fifty cts per cord for John F.
Thursday: Quite a thaw and rain. I cut up and salted pork.
