Friday, November 11, 1853: I carried Palmer Barnes three bushels turnips at 25 cts per and I reckoned with said Palmer Barnes and found that he owed me forty one cents and he gave me a due bill and receit. I took dinner with him and I carried the blacksmith Hines five bushel carrots and three bushels turnips and he credits me two dollars for the whole. I called to Russel Palmer’s to sell a beef but I did not see him.
Saturday: John F. went and paid Wm. B. Maxon two dol 50 cts for his second handed side hill plow. Tonight Aaron B. Chapman stayed with us, he is a trunk peddler. I paid him three cents for 12 steel pens.
Monday: This afternoon Russel Palmer came and drove him a young cow and butchered her and pays me 12 dol 25 cts and delivered half the beef, tallow, and hide, and this evening I took my wagon and fetched my half home. I had 12 pound rough tallow and my half the hide 31 pounds, he pays me 5¼ cts per.
Tuesday: I went to Lebanon and I had a new sheet iron bottom to the oven to my railway stove to Hicks tin shop, and paid fifty cts, and six cts to solder tea pot, and on the way home I paid six cts to Tilden’s herb shop for Nervine. John F. worked for Geo P. a drawing stone.
Wednesday: John F. fetched John Mantle and he soldered my water pipes and Geo P.’s water, and we paid him 63 cts. I paid 37½ cts of it. Today Gardner Green and son and two daughters cut turnips for me in the cider house, and take their pay in turnips.
Thursday: This forenoon I and Patrick worked on the highway with team and plow and wagon. Patrick began to bank the house.
Friday: I bank the house, this forenoon John F. and Patrick went onto my Rodgers farm with two loads manure and Patrick stayed and plowed with ox team. This afternoon John F. took my horse and wagon and carried his two sisters to Doctor Geo Dickson a visit and carried his Mother to Geo P’s on a visit.
Wednesday Nov. 23: Today Gardner Green came and got his turnips on his share of turnips which pays for him and children to cut one day 4½ bushels and P, let him have two bushels more to come and brought him two pigs and cut up two old hogs. Today some rainy and tonight a change in the weather quite freezing.
