Travels in Western NY – Missed Connections

July 2, 2010 By eastwickpress

Tuesday, September 20, 1853: This morning I paid our fare in the stage from Utica to Sequoit in New Hartford for us two 75 cts. I made a mistake, rode two miles to Clayville, paid 12 cts back to Sequoit, left the stage, walked half a mile to Geo Greenlief’s, took dinner and towards night his wife took their team and carried us two to brother John Campbell’s, I gave her little son as a present 25 cts.
Friday: This morning the son of John Campbell took his father’s team and carried us to Chequerville to take the stage for Eaton Log City. We went the two mile stage to New Hartford Village, paid 12½ cts, got there found no stage for Eaton until three o’clock pm. We then returned in the same stage to Chequerville for half price. There we visited with Mr. Mills and took dinner, then the same stage took us to New Hartford Village and at New Hartford village I paid our fare two dollars and went to Eaton village, that is called Log City, got there half past eight this evening. There Sidney S. Grosvenor’s hired man met us and took us to his house in Lebanon, five miles, at half past eleven o’clock tonight.
Friday: This morning at 4 o’clock S.A. Grosvenor sent his hired man and team  to Hamilton to carry us  to take the stage for Rome. When we got to Hamilton at five o’clock  the Rome stage was gone, and I paid our fare two dollars to Nider  Depot and got there half past ten o’clock. There at the depot tavern I paid six cts for a cup of coffee for my wife. We waited till one o’clock. I paid 34 cts for nine miles on the cars to Creen’s Corners in Rome. We then walked a half mile to brother Reuben Morton’s, there we stayed tonight.
Friday: This morning Jay Morton took their team and carried I and my wife to Rome Village. There I paid our fare on the cars to Troy which was four dollars and 40 cents. We left rome half past ten, got to Troy half past two o’clock.
