Hoosick Falls – Emmajane B. Cottrell died on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024; she was 101. She was born July 24th, 1922 to Howard and Lucy Babcock of Grafton, NY, where she was raised with her two older siblings, Raymond and Esther. In October 1944 she married Sherman Cottrell and relocated to his family dairy farm in Hoosick Falls. Emmajane was a wonderful wife, loving mother, and impeccable homemaker. She loved to cook and took pride in keeping her home and yard neat and organized. Stephentown – Isabel Joan Krebs of Stephentown, NY passed away at the age of 89 on March 13th, 2024 in East Greenbush, NY. Isabel was born on March 19th, 1934 in Davao City in the Philippines, to Edwin and Helen Cogan who were British citizens.
In December of 1941, Isabel and her parents were captured by the Japanese Army and placed in the Santo Tomas Internment Camp in the Philippine capital of Manila. The family survived incredibly harsh conditions for over three years before being liberated by the U.S. Army in February of 1945. Irma M. Hammersmith – Obituary
Petersburgh – Irma M. Hammersmith, 93, of Berlin passed peacefully on Thursday morning, February 29th, 2024. Born on Berlin Mountain on September 9th, 1930, Irma was the daughter of the late Albert and Elsie (Maxon) Yerden, and wife for 66 years to the late Joseph P. Hammersmith.
In the mid-1940s, Irma was employed at the shirt factory in Berlin and later worked at W. J. Cowee winding floral picks. Berlin – Allen C. Bentley, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3rd, 2024 at his daughter Jean’s home in Petersburgh. He was born in Berlin on November 6th, 1943, the son of the late Jesse and Dorothy (Yerton) Bentley.

Sylvia E. Leibensperger – Obituary
Sylvia Ellen (Pendleton) Leibensperger, 98, passed away on February 17th, 2024 in Johnston, RI. She was born on January 1st, 1926 on a farm in Hermon, ME, to Walter Pendleton and Iva (Miller) Pendleton. She graduated from Hermon Pond School, a one-room school house, in 1939, followed by Hermon High School in 1943, and the University of Maine, Orono in 1947. She worked as a teacher and counselor at the Bradley Home for Children in Riverside, RI and then as a Field Director for the Girl Scouts, first in Fall River, MA and then in Bergen County, NJ. In 1956 she married Howard Leibensperger, who was to be her beloved husband of 66 years. They raised their three daughters in Suffern and Monsey, NY. In 1977 Sylvia and Howard moved to Stephentown, NY, where Sylvia worked as the Librarian of the Stephentown Memorial Library, and where she and Howard were active in the Stephentown Historical Society. Sarah M. Murphy – Obituary
Sarah Mae Murphy (nee Johnson, then Updike) passed away peacefully at home at the age of 85 on January 20th after a decades long battle with Multiple System Atrophy. Even though she was paralyzed and unable to talk toward the end, she still possessed a smile that lit up the room and the faces of all in view.
Sarah was born in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1938 to Lydia Olivia Johnson (nee Peterson) and William Joseph Johnson. The family resided in several Western States (wherever the job market was strong) before settling in Aberdeen, SD where Sarah attended grade school, and finally Olympia, Washington, where she completed high school. Upon graduation, she took employment as a secretary in the legal department at Fort Lewis, where she met her first husband, Everett Updike. They were stationed in Germany, then returned to civilian life and ended up in Cambridge, NY to raise their two sons, William and Edward, and adopted daughter Kim Hoa. After Sarah and Ed divorced, Sarah took a position with the Vermont Department of Health, working as a Health Outreach Specialist, making home visits and administering the WIC program for 27 years.
In 2000 Sarah reconnected with one Jack Murphy via the newfangled computers and email, commencing a two year courtship, a seven year domestic partnership, and culminating in marriage in 2010. They journeyed as one, in joy, for 21 years. [Read more…] about Sarah M. Murphy – Obituary

Mary Margaret “Meg” Maloney, 84, died peacefully on Januaryy 26th, 2024, following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
The oldest of 11 children, Meg was born in Troy, NY on March 25th, 1939, the daughter of Philip and Mary (Seagroatt) Riccardi. She was raised in Berlin, NY where her family owned a large greenhouse operation which grew roses. James M. Hubbard – Obituary
Brunswick – James Mason Hubbard, 96, passed from this life on Saturday evening, January 20th, 2024. Born in Petersburgh on April 30th, 1927, he was the son of the late Eugene & Luella Hubbard.
Mason, as he was known by most, attended Petersburgh Elementary School and Hoosick Falls High School. He then served his country proudly as a US Marine during World War II, which brought him to Japan. Upon his discharge, he used his G.I. bill to attend the Utilities Engineering Institute in Chicago where he learned the refrigeration business. He used his knowledge to open his own business, Hubbard Refrigeration, which he operated out of Petersburgh for 40 years until retiring in 1985. Mason was the Petersburgh Town Supervisor for 2 terms and also served as a member of the Petersburgh Volunteer Fire Dept., the Berlin American Legion, the NRA, and picked up side work as a water dowser.
