Public Forum On Proposed Fracked Gas Pipeline

A public forum on a proposed fracked gas pipeline through Columbia County will be held on Saturday, June 7, from 7 to 9 pm at the Canaan Congregational Church, (at the intersection of Routes 5 and 295, Canaan). Bruce Winn, of the Berkshire Environmental Action Team, and Rosemary Wessel of No Fracked Gas in Mass, will speak about the environmental impact of the proposed high pressure fracked gas pipeline, health concerns and the rights of communities.

Junior Girl Scout Troop #1101 Helps Animals

The Junior Girl Scout Troop #1101 of the Berlin Central School District is collecting donations of linens, heating pads and dog food, as well as collecting five cent refundable bottles, to benefit the Rensselaer County Humane Society.

The bottles that are collected will be used to buy the few remaining pieces of necessary medical equipment, including a Pulse Ox machine, and also help fund a new roof, which was damaged over the winter, for the Mobile Spay and Neuter clinic. RCHS is hoping to have the Mobile clinic available to residents by the end of the summer.

Drop boxes are located at the Berlin Free Town Library, the Stephentown Memorial Library and the Berlin Elementary School. Please place donations in the appropriate marked containers. If you would prefer to make a monetary donation, you may send check or money orders to:

An Evening Of Classical Violin At The New Lebanon Library

Classical musician Katherine Liccardo will be performing at the New Lebanon Library on Friday, June 13, at 6:30 pm. She will perform a program of works for violin at this event, which is free and open to the public although donations for the performer are appreciated.

Liccardo, a native New Yorker, began her violin and piano studies at age 3. Her passion for music started at home, growing up in a household of music teachers and performers. She received her Bachelor of Music Degree from Mannes College The New School for Music and is currently pursuing her Master of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Liccardo has served as concertmaster at both of these prestigious institutions.

An active chamber musician, Liccardo is a founding member and first violinist of NEXTquartet. One recent highlight for the quartet was working with Parsons School of Design and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on conductor Marin Alsop’s project to create new orchestral garments for the modern orchestral player. She has a special interest in new music and has premiered works by Elliott Carter, Lowell Lieberman and Robert Cuckson. Liccardo is a certified Suzuki teacher and holds teaching positions at the Center for Preparatory Studies in Music at Queens College and the Saint David’s School. She has had a teaching studio based in New Hyde Park since 2009.

Cub Scout Pack 116 Father’s Day Breakfast

Cub Scout Pack 116 will serve breakfast on Father’s Day, June 15, at the Tsatsawassa Protective Firehouse. The young members of this Pack will be excited to serve you while their parents and members of the Tsatsawassa Fire Company prepare your breakfast order in the kitchen. Breakfast will be served from 8 until 11:30 am and consist of your choice of French toast or pancakes, sausage or bacon, eggs prepared to your order plus beverages at a cost of $6 for adults, $3 for students 5-12 and free for children under five. The firehouse is handicap accessible and located on Firehouse Lane near the intersection of Route 20 and 66N behind the Brainard post office. Parking is available in the rear. Enjoy breakfast with your friends and neighbors while supporting these young Scouts!

Raymond Sears, Jr.

West Lebanon – Raymond “Dutch” Sears, Jr., 77, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Crescent Manor Nursing Center in Bennington, VT, with his family at his side. Born in Pittsfield, MA, on March 22, 1937, he was the son of the late Raymond and Alice Hatch Sears, Sr.

Dutch was a resident of West Lebanon, NY, for most of his life and had worked on a chicken farm there. He then worked in construction and helped build the Walter B. Howard Elementary School in West Lebanon and the Mohawk Mall in Schenectady, NY. He later was employed by Sampson Hydraulics and Zwack, Inc. in Stephentown, NY, as a machinist. He was an outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing.

Dutch was the former husband of Margaret Sears of Stephentown, devoted father of Tammy and husband Jon Cimijotti of East Greenbush, NY, Christine Sears-Parker and husband George of Hoosick Falls, NY, Donald and wife Carissa Sears of East Chatham, NY, and Charley Sears and Michelle Hoffman of East Nassau, NY, grandfather of Courtney and husband Joe Marro, Samantha Sears, Corey Cimijotti, Fallon Parker, Timmy Sears and Dawson Cimijotti, brother of William Sears of West Lebanon and the late Robert Sears. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is Friday, June 6, at 10 am at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown, with Rev. Clinton Dugger officiating. Relatives and friends were invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 7 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that contributions be made to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society SPCA, 111 Humane Society Road, Hudson, NY, 12534, or to theTown of Hoosick Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 16, Hoosick Falls, NY, 12090. A condolence book is available at ParkerBrosMemorial.com.

David Stocks Will Speak On The Great Stone Barn Project At The Stephentown Historical Society

The Great Stone Barn at the Shaker community at Mount Lebanon was a wonder of its time. After a devastating fire in 1972, only its masonry walls still stand. David Stocks, President of the Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon, will give an illustrated talk on “The Great Stone Barn Project: Past, Present, Future” to the Stephentown Historical Society on Monday, June 2, at 7:30 pm. The meeting will be at the Stephentown Heritage Center on Garfield Road (County Route 26), Stephentown. The program is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. Berkshire Highlanders At The New Lebanon Library

The Berkshire Highlanders Pipe Band will perform on the lawn at the New Lebanon Library on Wednesday, June 4, at 6:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public, although donations for the performers are appreciated. Because the concert will be held outdoors, it is weather dependent.

Established in 1976, the Berkshire Highlanders pipe band marches and plays from St. Patrick’s Day in March to Columbus Day in October in a splendid array of college graduations and alumni reunions, patriotic ceremonies, fundraisers and benefits, Highland games and gatherings, fairs and firemen musters and such one-time engagements as the inauguration ceremony for a Massachusetts governor.

Grover, Worster And Demary At The New Lebanon Library

Local favorites David Grover, Linda Worster and Puggy Demary will be performing together at the New Lebanon Library on Sunday,  June 1, at 2 pm.  The group will be performing originals plus a mix of folk and rock from the 50s, 60s and 70s. From the Beatles to Crosby, Stills and Nash, from Simon and Garfunkel to Joni Mitchell, this group is always wonderful. All are welcome and the event is free, although donations for the performers are encouraged.

David Grover has earned countless awards including a Grammy nomination and Artist of the Year. He spent many years as Arlo Guthrie’s lead guitar and band leader. Linda Worster has toured as a solo musician throughout New England, New York and New Jersey. She has opened for many well known artists including Harry Chapin, David Bromberg, Bill Staines and Joan Baez. Puggy Demary has been performing in the Berkshires for decades. He plays bass, guitar and piano, and is a songwriter as well.
