The Petersburgh Fire Department held its annual installation banquet at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Petersburgh on Saturday, April 24.
After a delicious buffet of roast beef and turkey catered by Fresco’s Restaurant of New Lebanon, Battalion 5-0 Commander Cyril Grant swore in the officers. Bill Seel will be Chief again this year, and Nathan Michaels will be Assistant Chief.

Petersburgh Shaving Mill Operation Has Day In Court

At the Town court session on April 27, Petersburgh Town Justice Paul Montgomery heard arguments from both sides on the question of whether or not Brian O’Donovan’s shaving mill operation at the back of his gravel pit on Church Hollow Road is exempt from Site Plan review.

Masons Honor Girl Scouts

Van Rensselaer Star Lodge No. 400 celebrated its Annual Ladies Appreciation and Awards Night on Saturday, April 17, at the Grange Hall in Hoosick. Lodge Master Bruce Hansen welcomed members and guests and the invocation was given by Jason Dzembo, Hudson-Champlain Regional Assistant Grand Lecturer. Everyone enjoyed a roast beef dinner with home made pies served by members of the Grange.

BCS Board Hears About The Budget

At the Berlin BOE meeting on April 27, Heinz Noeding, once again, voiced a number of concerns to Berlin’s administration and School Board. He was upset that the “budget drafts [were] not documented on the school district’s website, unlike every other district in the county.” Accordingly, Noeding felt the community was not in a position to fully understand budget issues or partake in the budget process. Furthermore, he claimed that the Board did not always provide written explanations for its key decisions.

Hoosick School Board Action – Positions Eliminated

At its April 22 meeting, the Hoosick Falls School Board voted to abolish the positions of two Special Education teachers, two Elementary Education teachers, two Reading teachers, one Home and Careers teacher, and ten Teaching Assistants. The vote on this motion was 6-0, with Rye Mausert abstaining. These staff reductions had previously been proposed and debated as part of the District’s budget deliberations, and this action is simply the final implementation.

Baseball And Softball Season Opens In Hoosick Falls

It was a beautiful Saturday in gorgeous Hoosick Falls as the baseball and softball teams lined up for their annual parade. The Parade went from Wood Park to the baseball fields at the Water Works Road. Maggie McAuliffe, the President of the baseball club introduced the teams that are split up into mini-minors, 10 and under and 12 and under for softball; and t-ball, instructional majors and minors for baseball.

Three Earn Black Belts In Stephentown

The mood in the room was long-awaited excitement as Cassandra Beattie, brown belt, Patricia Court, brown belt and Jess Court, black sash, took a seat in front of Sensei Fish and Third Degree Black belts Timothy Etman and Alex Bassallo (both of Grafton). These three students were going to finally receive their black belts after intense mind and body training.

Deanna Nash Is BCS Valedictorian For 2010

Deanna Nash of Grafton has been chosen to be the Valedictorian for Berlin High School’s Class of 2010. Nash is both a scholar and an athlete. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Secretary of the Student Council and currently Class President. She has been a mainstay in varsity soccer, basketball and softball. How does she get everything done and do it so well? The trick, she said, is to “use your time wisely.”
