There is a large poster in the main lobby of Hoosick Falls Central School with the names of men and women who were, or are, in the military. The poster states the year they graduated and in which combat area they served. It doesn’t mention what branch of the service they were, or are, in. The graduating years range from 1973 to 2009. Twenty men and one woman from HFCS have served in Iraq. One was in Iraq twice, another four times. One served in Kuwait and Iraq. Thirteen men and one woman have served in Afghanistan. The list may be far from complete.

At Special Meeting BCSD Board Votes To Accept Barter Proposals For Empty Buildings

The Berlin School District has decided to seek specific proposals from the Grafton Fire District and the Stephentown Town Board for taking over ownership of the closed elementary school properties in those towns. School Board President Gina Goodermote, having failed to get approval two weeks ago to hold a referendum in March on this issue, came back to the Board at a special meeting on January 31 with a new resolution. It calls for the Board to request the Grafton Fire District and the Town of Stephentown to submit “barter” proposals by March 6.

Grafton Wind Energy Project Moves Forward At Last

At its meeting on Monday, January 30, the Grafton Planning Board finally approved the application of Gamesa Energy to erect a meteorological tower in the wilderness at the end of Stuffle Street. This is a significant development for the Town of Grafton and another example of the positive future for alternative energy in the northeast.

HF Cumby Presents Check To Varsity Club

During a break in the HFCS Ken Baker Classic Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, January 28, Cumberland Farms District Manager Jim Long and Hoosick Falls Store Manager Kristi Hebert presented a check for $2,337 to members of the HFCS Varsity Club. The check was the result of a month long promotion by Cumberland Farms to celebrate the upgrading of the Hoosick Falls store. For a month Cumberland Farms donated 20 cents from every Chill Zone beverage, iced tea and coffee (iced or hot) and several other items to the Varsity Club. Cumberland Farms guaranteed the Club $1,000. The drive far exceeded that goal.

Sheriff Cites 28 Teens At New Lebanon Drinking Party

A January 23 Columbia County Sheriff’s raid on a drinking party at the New Lebanon residence of New Lebanon Town Supervisor Mike Benson on County Route 5 resulted in the arrest of 28 teens.
Twenty-seven teens were cited by Sheriff’s Deputies Hofstetter and Madison for underage drinking. Another teen was cited for possessing marijuana. All of the teens cited were from counties other than Columbia County except one.

The Stephentown Memorial LibraryGets Grant For New Books For Children And Young Adults

Stephentown Memorial Library recently received 82 new books for children and young adults thanks to The Libri Foundation “Books for Children” Grant. The Library was also selected to receive $350 worth of math and science books. The total amount of donated books is valued at over $1,400. Libraries may apply to the Libri Foundation grant every three years. This is the third time the Stephentown Memorial Library has received this generous grant.

A Party For Sue Putnam

Last Friday was Sue Putnam’s last day on the job as Secretary for the Town of Grafton. She retired after serving over 25 years in that position. Town employees and officers took part in a nice, little gathering at the end of the day with a beautiful cake wishing her the best on her retirement.

St. Rose Champion Coach Is Speaker At HF Girls Soccer Banquet

NCAA Division II 2011 Coach of the Year Laurie Darling Gutheil was the guest speaker at the HFCS Girls Soccer banquet on Sunday, January 29. This year Gutheil coached her St. Rose women’s soccer team to the school’s first ever National Championship in Division 2. Their record was 24-1-1. She said her team was focused from day one.

Troop 65 Sells Chili To Raise Money For The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Once again Boy Scouts from Troop 65 will be selling their homemade chili in front of the Grand Union in Hoosick from 10 am to 2 pm on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5. Treat yourself to a fresh bowl of chili complete with cornbread and all the fixin’s for only $7. All proceeds will be donated to the Northeastern NY Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Nominate The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal

The Hoosick Falls St. Patrick’s Day Parade organizers are getting ready for the Saturday, March 17, event. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 Parade Grand Marshal. The nominee must be of Irish descent and a resident of the Town of Hoosick.
