Jeremy Burns Wrestles For New England Wrestling Association Title

Springfield College freshman Jeremy Burns of Hoosick Falls who had lost a match early on in the New England Wrestling Association’s (NEWA) Conference tournament last weekend, came all the way back to wrestle for the individual title in the 184-pound weight classification before losing. Jeremy placed 2nd in the 184 lb. weight class – as a freshman – earning All-New England honors. He won six matches and lost two over the two days of the tournament which was held at Western New England College in Springfield, MA. Burns was seeded 5th – he beat the 2nd, 3rd and 4th seeded wrestlers before falling to the number 1 seeded wrestler in the finals by a score of 7-5, narrowly missing out on qualifying for a trip to the NCAA Division 3 Nationals in Iowa on March 5.
Burns graduated from Hoosick Falls Central last year and was a two-time New York State Place finisher – placing second in New York State last year and third as a junior.
Springfield College scored 100.5 points to place second as a team. They entered the tournament ranked third in New England behind Williams and Johnson & Wales. Williams was the team winner, successfully defending the title it won last year when Springfield College hosted this tournament. The Ephs scored 128.5 points. Johnson & Wales and Wesleyan each had 95 points and Bridgewater State had 88.5. Finishing sixth through 14th were Southern Maine (82), Rhode Island College (78), Roger Williams (46), Plymouth State (42.5), host Western New England (41), Trinity (39.5), WPI (25), Coast Guard (15) and Norwich (2.5).
