If they had just followed the first survival essential their exposure to possible tragedy would have been greatly reduced.  You won&#039;t find the first survival essential on the so-called &quot;ten essentials&quot; list so don&#039;t bother looking there for it.

The first survival essential is something you leave at home rather than take with you - it is information you leave with a trusted friend or relative about your plans.  One who will call the proper authorities if you don&#039;t return as expected. Had the DEC been alerted about their failure to return as expected shortly after dark they probably would have been found before midnight.</description>
